Preparing for winter

Keeping soil covered is extremely beneficial to all soil microbes. Although activity slows down in the winter due to the colder weather and reduced food availability (because there are less root exudates even where over-winter cover crops are used) a good layer of mulch (2-5cm, or more!) keeps soil surface temperatures from freezing and provides a source of food so at least some biological activity can be going on in readiness for spring.
