Learn how to rehabilitate degraded soil and return the missing microbes. This is the hands-on way to create biodiverse designer composts and biologically rich extracts and teas.
This workshop is for growers of any scale who want to understand and adopt the Soil Food Web approach to composting.
Understand what’s in compost and learn, hands-on, how to create designer composts to feed the microbes in your garden and support the healthy growth of plants and food. Practice common composting techniques and discover how to produce biologically rich teas and extracts.
Our delicious lunches are entirely plant-based, and prepared by our Vegan-Natural Chef, Courtney. Please let us know in advance if you have any special dietary requirements.
Teas, coffee, and soft drinks are available as required throughout the day.
Full-day workshop, including lunch: £225pp
Location:RhizoPhyllia Kitchen Gardens, Royal Wootton Bassett, SN4 7ED Sample itinerary(times may change slightly): | |
| 9:15am | Welcome and orientation. |
| 9:30am | Getting down with decomposition. |
| 10:00am | What’s in a compost?
As well as looking at composition, texture, structure, and moisture (and smell) we will consider Broad Spectrum (nutrient) analysis, and prepare samples for pH and salinity tests, and humic/fulvic acid observation. |
| 11:00am | Soil Food Web microorganisms and nutrient cycling. |
| 12:00am | Sorting the wheat from the chaff. |
| 1:00pm | Lunch. |

With refreshments at 3:00pm we will chat about other types of composting such as bokashi, HugelKultur, and Korean Natural Farming in the light of knowledge gained from earlier sessions.
You will put your learning into practice by each preparing a recipe for a crop of your choosing. We (you!) will gather materials from around the RhizoPhyllia gardens and Compost Station and create a small test batch to take home and monitor. So don’t forget to bring a plastic carrier bag (ordinary supermarket size) with no holes in the base! |
| 4:00pm | Extracts, teas, infusions, and amendments. |
| 5:00pm | Final thoughts and questions |
